SAMVAD’s National Consultation on Child & Adolescent Mental Health at NIMHANS on 20th November 2021

SAMVAD (Support, Advocacy & Mental health interventions for children in Vulnerable circumstances And Distress), is a National Initiative & Integrated Resource for Child Protection, Mental Health and Psychosocial Care being supported by the Ministry of Women & Child Development. The project is located at the Dept. of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, NIMHANS.

With the vision of enhancing child and adolescent psychosocial well-being, through promotion of integrated approaches to mental health and protection, SAMVAD was established in June 2020 in order to extend its support and activities to all the states in the country.

The Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Ms. Smriti Zubin Irani launched the 2nd phase of the SAMVAD programme in Bengaluru and commemorated the successful completion of one year of SAMVAD – Support, Advocacy & Mental health interventions for children in Vulnerable circumstances And Distress. The SAMVAD is a national initiative and integrated resource that works in child protection, mental health and psychosocial care.

SAMVAD-NIMHANS-MoWCD || Commemoration of First Year

The project is supported by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India. The event was commemorated by the Hon’ble Minister of Women and Child Development, Smriti Zubin Irani, at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, NIMHANS, where SAMVAD is located. The welcome address was given by Dr. Pratima Murthy (Director, NIMHANS) which was followed by an introduction to SAMVAD by Dr. Shekhar Seshadri (Senior Professor, Dept. of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, NIMHANS and Principal Investigator of SAMVAD) where he announced the launch of SAMVAD’s second year operations to respond to the increasing need and requests of child protection across the country. SAMVAD’s new initiatives with regards to mental health and psychosocial care of children in difficult circumstances encompasses a specialized training curriculum on childhood trauma, interventions for children in conflict with the law, forensics in child and adolescent psychiatry and mental health, education and mental health support to children with special needs, protection and care in the context of adoption and foster care and integration of child protection and mental health in the Panchayati Raj systems. He expressed his gratitude to the Hon’ble Minister for her elaborate vision and unending support for the project. Dr. Indevar Pandey, Secretary, MoWCD and also provided opening remarks highlighting the importance of integration of child protection and mental health at a policy level.
